How to Become Competent in Test & Tag in New Zealand
If you’re wondering who is allowed to perform electrical test and tag work, the answer is simple — anyone who is competent to do so. Competency is the key requirement under AS/NZS 3760:2022.
While there are various ways to demonstrate competency, the most recognised and reliable method is completing formal training. That’s where Metrotest — New Zealand’s largest locally owned test and tag training provider — plays a major role.
With nearly 30 years of industry experience and millions of tests completed through its professional testing division, Metrotest doesn’t just teach test and tag — they actively do it. That real-world knowledge is built into their training programmes.
Metrotest offers two clear pathways to competency:
✅ Face-to-face classroom training
✅ Online, self-paced training options
Here’s how each pathway works.
In-Person Test & Tag Training
In-person training is ideal for those who prefer hands-on learning and direct interaction with expert instructors.
How it works:
- Choose a training location near you — Metrotest offers courses nationwide.
- Receive your course information and attend on the scheduled day.
- Bring your own PAT tester if you have one (optional) — trainers can show you how to operate your specific model.
- Complete the classroom theory.
- Perform a supervised practical test to demonstrate safe and correct procedures.
- Once you pass, your trainer takes your photo for your Metrotest ID card.
Graduates receive a Metrotest competency card and certificate, recognised by businesses across New Zealand. If you need equipment, Metrotest also supplies and hires PAT testers.
Online Test & Tag Training
Prefer to learn from home? Metrotest offers a flexible online training pathway covering the same content and assessment requirements as in-person learning.
The online system includes three stages:
- Bronze: Free entry-level introduction to try online training with no commitment.
- Silver: Skill development and theory learning.
- Gold: Advanced content and full competency preparation.
What makes it unique?
- Learn at your own pace — no deadlines.
- Access a PAT simulator for practice.
- Option to receive a real PAT tester as part of your package.
- Complete a one-on-one practical assessment via Zoom with a qualified trainer.
Once you pass, you’ll receive the same Metrotest ID card and certificate as classroom learners.
So Which Option Should You Choose?
Both pathways lead to full competency, and both include expert support. The best option depends on your preferences:
- Choose in-person if you like hands-on workshops and face-to-face instruction.
- Choose online if you prefer flexible learning at your own pace.
Still unsure? Start with Metrotest’s free Bronze online course — it’s a zero-cost way to get a feel for the material and see if the online pathway suits your style.
